Teeth whitening at home
Nowadays, a beautiful and healthy smile is in great demand, and the white color of the teeth is one of the key factors affecting the perception of beauty and attractiveness. Although professional teeth whitening at the dentist is effective, it usually comes with a high cost. Therefore, many people choose to whiten their teeth at home using various methods and products available over the counter. Check out the pros and cons of each method to choose the best method to suit your needs and expectations.
What effects can be expected?
The effects of teeth whitening at home depend on the method used, the condition of the dentition and the individual characteristics of the patient. The most commonly used method is ready-made kits for home use, such as strips or gels, which contain a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide. They act on the surface discoloration of the teeth, and the effects are usually visible after a few days of use. The final result depends on the degree of discoloration and the length of treatment.
Other home methods, such as using baking soda, oxidized water, coconut oil or activated charcoal, may produce faster results, but their effectiveness and safety are not guaranteed.
However, it should be borne in mind that improper or too frequent teeth whitening at home can lead to hypersensitivity and damage to the enamel. In the case of more serious discoloration, it is advisable to consult a dentist before starting any whitening method.
Start by removing tartar
Before teeth whitening, it is useful to remove tartar - a hard deposit formed by the accumulation of bacteria, plaque and food debris. The stone makes it difficult to brush your teeth effectively and can cause uneven whitening and inflammation of the gums.
Stone removal requires specialized tools and is performed by a dentist or dental hygienist. The methods of removing the stone are:
- Scaling — mechanical stone removal using ultrasonic or sand-air scaler. The procedure is painless, although it can cause slight bleeding of the gums.
- Sandblasting — removal of scale and discoloration by means of a jet of air, water and a special sand paste. It can also cause minor bleeding.
- Lasers — precise and painless method of stone removal, minimizing tissue damage.
Home methods, such as the use of special brushes, dental floss and rinses, are not as effective as professional cleaning.
Home Ways to Whiten Teeth
Whitening pastes contain components such as activated carbon, perhydrol or hydrogen peroxide. They mainly remove deposits from the surface of the teeth, and do not lighten their internal structure. They are readily available, but their effectiveness is limited, and excessive use can lead to enamel erosion and hypersensitivity.
Whitening overlays are plastic molds that fit the teeth, in which a gel with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide is placed. Overlays are worn for several hours a day or at night. They are convenient, but not suitable for people with hypersensitivity of teeth or periodontal disease.
Whitening strips are elastic strips coated with a whitening agent that are applied to the teeth. They contain hydrogen peroxide or perhydrol, remove surface discoloration, but can cause hypersensitivity. They do not work on artificial teeth or crowns.
Whitening Gels is applied to the teeth with a brush. They contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide. Contact of the gel with the gums should be avoided so as not to cause irritation.
Activated carbon has adsorbing properties and removes surface stains, but can damage enamel.
Coconut oil is used as a mouthwash or toothpaste (for example, with the addition of soda). It contains lauric acid, which has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, but does not whiten teeth immediately and significantly. Rather, it is a complement to oral hygiene.
Homemade LED lamps activate whitening substances on the teeth. They should be used according to the instructions and after consulting a dentist, as excessive use can damage the enamel and gums. Their effects are weaker than professional lamps in the office.
Baking soda has an abrasive and alkalizing effect, helps to remove stains, but excessive use can damage the enamel.
Apple Cider Vinegar contains acetic acid, which removes stains, but can cause enamel erosion and irritation. It should be diluted and used in moderation.
Strawberries contain salicylic acid and vitamin C, which may slightly help remove stains, but their effectiveness is limited, and the sugar they contain can harm teeth.
Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps break down proteins and remove stains and reduce inflammation, but its whitening effect is limited and sugar can harm teeth.
How to care for whitened teeth?
- Brush your teeth regularly, preferably with a whitening paste to maintain the effect and remove deposits.
- Avoid drinks and foods that cause discoloration, such as coffee, tea, red wine, sodas, red fruits, and curries.
- Use a brush with soft bristles that are gentle on enamel and gums.
- Use dental floss regularly to remove food debris and bacteria from the interdental spaces.
- Observe regular visits to the dentist to monitor the condition of the oral cavity and prevent the formation of new discolorations.
Teeth whitening at home and in the office — which way to choose?
The choice of method depends on individual needs, preferences and budget. Whitening in the dental office is faster, more effective and gives more lasting results thanks to the use of stronger means and specialized equipment. The procedure is controlled by a specialist, which increases safety.
Whitening at home is cheaper and convenient, but usually requires a longer application time and gives weaker effects. It can be a good option for people with slight discoloration or as a complement to a professional treatment.
