What instead of a tooth implant?

Each of us wants to have the best possible smile — preferably full, without visible breaks and cavities. Tooth loss is not only an aesthetic defect, but also a functional and health problem. The absence of a tooth can lead to serious complications, and their treatment in the future can be time-consuming, difficult and expensive. Therefore, cavities in the dentition should be replenished as soon as possible. What to choose? Popular implants, proven prosthetic bridges, or other alternatives? Let's see what the possibilities are.

Lack of teeth is a serious problem

The loss of even one tooth adversely affects the entire stomatognathic system, that is, the bones, muscles and joints of the jaw. The remaining teeth move towards the free space, can skew and tilt. The opposite tooth can protrude from the alveolus (the so-called Godon effect). The movements of the teeth cause overloads and an increased risk of their damage. In addition, the absence of a tooth leads to atrophy of the alveolar bone, as the bone is not adequately stimulated during chewing. The longer we delay in replenishing the defect, the more difficult and expensive the treatment is.

Alternatives to Dental Implants

Prosthetic bridges

Bridges are the most commonly chosen alternative to implants. They consist of crowns installed on the teeth adjacent to the cavity, which act as pillars, and artificial teeth at the site of the gap. Bridges are durable, aesthetic and allow you to quickly restore chewing function. Their disadvantage is the need to grind healthy abutment teeth, which can weaken them and require root canal treatment. Bridges do not prevent bone atrophy at the site of the defect, which after years can cause the prosthesis to mismatch and expose the roots of the abutment teeth. There are also resin-bonded bridges (e.g. Maryland bridge) that are less invasive and especially recommended for front teeth.

Prosthetic crowns

A crown is the restoration of a single damaged tooth or its remains. Made of composite or ceramic, it allows you to quickly and aesthetically restore the shape and function of the tooth. A crown can only be put on if the rest of the tooth is healthy and strong enough. Otherwise, it is necessary to apply a crown on the implant.

Removable dentures

Removable dentures are a solution for people who cannot or do not want to opt for implants. They can be complete (intended for toothless people) or partial (matched to the rest of the teeth). Dentures are cheaper and less invasive, but less comfortable and durable than implants or bridges. Modern dentures are made of materials that mimic natural teeth, which improves aesthetics.

Bridges on fiberglass

An alternative to traditional bridges are bridges on fiberglass, which require minimal interference with the abutment teeth. They are less durable than classic bridges, but allow you to protect healthy teeth from grinding.

Dental Implants — Summary

Implants are the most durable and effective method of filling dental deficiencies, which best prevents bone loss and tooth displacement. The procedure for implantation of the implant takes about half an hour, and even in the course of one visit you can receive a temporary crown. However, implants are the most expensive option and not always possible to use due to health contraindications (e.g. unnormalized diabetes, blood diseases, pregnancy). However, it is worth considering it as a long-term investment.

Summary

The choice of method for filling dental deficiencies depends on the state of oral health, the number and location of missing teeth, budget and aesthetic expectations. Alternatives to implants are mainly prosthetic bridges (traditional and on fiberglass), crowns and removable dentures (total or partial). Each of these methods has its advantages and limitations, so the decision should be made after consultation with the dentist, who will select the solution best suited to the individual needs of the patient.
