Tooth Insertion — Which Method Is Best?

In a healthy and full smile lies not only charm, but also strength. Nevertheless, various life situations — from accidents to illnesses — can lead to the loss of one or more teeth. For those who have experienced such a loss, the question becomes extremely relevant: “How best to replace a missing tooth?”. There are many methods of prosthetic restoration, and the choice of the best depends on the individual conditions of the patient.

Prosthetic crown - when there is something to build on

Prosthetic restoration of a tooth is a process in which a dental prosthetist restores the form and function of the tooth through the use of appropriate tools and materials. This is especially important when the tooth is damaged as a result of caries, trauma or other health problems. A prosthetic crown on the root is used when the tooth is so damaged that it cannot be rebuilt with a traditional filling, but the root remains healthy and strong.

The process begins with the removal of the diseased or damaged part of the tooth, and then the tooth is ground and shaped to fit snugly against the crown. The dentist makes an accurate impression, which goes to the laboratory, where a matching crown is made. During the waiting time, the patient wears a temporary crown. After the permanent crown is made, it is cemented to the prepared tooth.

The prosthetic crown restores the appearance and function of the tooth, improves the comfort of eating and speaking, and prevents further damage. Crowns can be made of porcelain, gold or metal alloys, and the choice of material depends on the location of the tooth, aesthetic preferences and the cost of treatment.

Inlay and onlay cartridges

An inlay cartridge is used to repair a tooth that is too damaged for a regular filling, but does not require a crown. It is placed within the furrows on the surface of the chewing tooth, restoring its structure and function. After cleaning and preparing the tooth, an impression is made, on the basis of which the laboratory creates a cartridge, which is then cemented onto the tooth.

Inlay inserts can be made of gold, porcelain or composite. They are more resistant to contractions and extensions than traditional fillings, which increases the durability of treatment. In addition, they facilitate hygiene and support gum health.

The onlay insert is similar, but used for larger lesions involving one or more tooth nodules. It is larger than the inlay and covers part or all of the chewing surface. The process of its execution and cementing is analogous to the inlay.

Durability of the prosthetic crown

The length of use of the crown depends on the material, the condition of the patient's oral cavity, his hygiene and dietary habits, and the technique of execution. Typically, crowns serve from 5 to 15 years. Porcelain and metal crowns are very durable, while composite ones can wear out faster.

Regular hygiene, including brushing, flossing and follow-up visits to the dentist, significantly extends the life of the crown. Avoiding hard and sticky foods and habits such as grinding your teeth also help keep the crown in good condition. Over time, however, any crown may need to be replaced due to wear or weakening of the cement.

Tooth implant — from scratch to a new tooth

A tooth implant is an artificial root, usually made of titanium, that is surgically implanted into the jaw or jaw bone to replace a lost tooth. The implants integrate with the bone in the process of osteointegration, which ensures stability.

Implants are used for the loss of a single tooth, several teeth (as a basis for a bridge) or all teeth (to stabilize dentures). They also help preserve the structure of the bone, preventing its atrophy and changes in the shape of the face.

The process of implant implantation takes from several months to more than a year and includes the placement of the implant, its integration into the bone, the attachment of the fastener and the imposition of a prosthetic crown.

Durability and safety of implants

Implants can last 25 years or more if they are implanted correctly, and the patient takes care of oral hygiene and visits the dentist regularly. Although implants are very durable, they may require maintenance or repairs.

They are safe and effective, with a high success rate (90-95%). Titanium is biocompatible and rarely causes allergic reactions. Like any surgical procedure, implantation carries the risk of infection, nerve damage or failure of osteointegration, but this risk is minimized by experienced specialists and appropriate postoperative care.

What is the best method of prosthetic restoration of a tooth?

There is no unequivocal answer to this question. The choice of method depends on the condition of the tooth residue, the quantity and quality of the bone, the general health of the patient and his expectations. The decision is made after a detailed consultation with a dentist or prosthetist, who will assess the condition of the oral cavity and present the available options, helping to choose the best solution.

In summary, both prosthetic crowns, inlay/onlay inserts, and dental implants have their place in prosthetic treatment. The choice of the best method depends on the individual conditions of the patient and should be made in consultation with a specialist.
