Dental Implant Care — How to Do It Right?

Dental implants are permanent, artificial restorations that replace natural teeth. Although they are not prone to caries, this does not mean that their hygiene can be neglected - lack of proper care can lead to inflammation of the gums and complications that threaten the durability of the implant.

Implant care right after the procedure

  • Avoid eating until the anesthesia subsides Local anesthesia can cause paresis and numbness, which increases the risk of biting the tongue or cheek and damaging the implants.
  • Rinse the oral cavity with antibacterial liquid — in the first days after the procedure, when brushing is difficult due to swelling, rinsing helps maintain hygiene.
  • Brush your teeth carefully — avoid brushing directly around the implant until complete healing, so as not to damage the tissues and delay healing.
  • Use a brush with soft bristles — this reduces irritation and the risk of mechanical damage to the implant area.
  • Avoid smoking and hard, acidic foods Smoking makes healing difficult, and hard and acidic foods can cause pain and irritation.
  • Take a rest — limit physical activity and stress to support the regeneration of the body and tissues of the oral cavity.

Daily implant care on a daily basis

After complete healing and placing the crown on the implant, it is necessary to implement permanent hygiene habits:

  • Brushing — wash the implants at least twice a day with a soft or medium-hard brush, paying particular attention to the area where the implant joins the gum and the interdental spaces.
  • Flossing and interdental brushes — use dental floss or special interdental brushes that effectively remove plaque from hard-to-reach places.
  • Rinsing the oral cavity — use alcohol-free antibacterial lotions that reduce bacteria and prevent inflammation. Rinsing does not replace brushing, but is an important complement to hygiene.
  • Dental Irrigator — this device flushes food debris and bacteria from interdental spaces and other hard-to-reach places under pressure, supporting the care of implants, bridges and braces.
  • Regular check-ups - visit the dentist about every 6 months, who will assess the condition of the implants, remove tartar and make prosthetic corrections if necessary. This allows early detection and prevention of complications such as gingivitis or peri-implantitis.

What else is worth knowing?

  • Implants are resistant to decay, but they can accumulate bacteria and plaque that cause inflammation of the gums and tissues around the implant.
  • Toothpaste should be gentle, without strong abrasives, so as not to damage the surface of the implant and gums.
  • Smoking negatively affects the health of the oral cavity and the healing of implants, so it is worth giving up the addiction or at least limiting smoking after the procedure.
  • Proper implant hygiene is an investment in their durability and aesthetics, allowing you to enjoy a healthy smile for many years.

Proper dental implant care is:

  • Gentle but thorough brushing with a soft brush at least twice a day,
  • Cleaning the interdental spaces with dental floss or interdental brushes,
  • The use of antibacterial lotions for rinsing the oral cavity,
  • The use of a dental irrigator to remove impurities from hard-to-reach places,
  • Regular check-ups at the dentist and professional cleaning of implants,
  • Avoiding smoking and hard and acidic foods, especially after the procedure.

Thanks to these practices, implants will serve for a long time, while maintaining functionality and aesthetics.
